2010 Opening Night by Kim Bridle

John Pizzarelli Quartet
A Tribute to Duke Ellington
This Friday - July 16th

Called "madly creative" by the Los Angeles Times and " the genial genius of the guitar" by the Toronto Star, world-renowned singer, guitar player and bandleader John Pizzarelli and his quartet perform at the Great Waters Music Festival acoustic tent this Friday, July 16 at 8:00 pm.

Son of guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli, John started playing the guitar at the age of six. As a young man he had the privilege of performing with a number of jazz greats including Benny Goodman, Les Paul, Soot Sims and Slam Stewart. He has opened for Dave Brubeck, Ramsey Lewis and Rosemary Clooney and in 1993 had the privilege of opening for Frank Sinatra's international tour. In 1997, Pizzarelli made his Broadway debut in the musical "Dream".

A master in the art of reinventing jazz classics, Pizzarelli zings them with cool accents of swing or pop accompanied by his sublilme and inventive guitar playing. The Quartet will celebrate the music of Duke Ellington on Friday and feature music from their most recent CD, released in February, Rocking' and Rhythm. Pizzarelli says that he heard a tremendous amount of Duke Ellington's music listening to his Dad, Bucky, play. Like Ellington, Pizzarelli crafts his performances to spotlight the talents of his band members.

In 2009, Pizzarelli won the prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival's Ella Fitzgerald Award. He is married to Broadway star Jessica Molaskey with whom he performs annual engagements at the Café Carlyle in New York City. His television appearances include the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Late Show with David Letterman, and Live with Regis and Kelly. His also hosts a nationally syndicated radio program entitled "Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli".

Festival patrons who have purchased tickets for this performance, without an exception, have raved about Pizzarelli's fabulous and entertaining performances - brilliantly and uniquely delivered by a man with grace and the ability to delightfully connect with his audience!
