2019 Our Big Backyard Series
Saturday, January 12, 2019; 10:00-11:30
Explore Prescott Farm and look for tracks, scat, hair and other clues that can help us tell the story of what our animal friends (squirrels, mice, coyotes — maybe even porcupines and bobcats!) are up to in the winter!
Let’s Go Owling!
Friday, February 15, 2019; **6:00-7:30pm**
Have you ever heard an owl call that sounds like “Who-cooks-for-you-who-cooks-for-you-all?” That’s a barred owl! This time of year they are starting their mating season and are quite vocal. We’ll start inside with the story Owl Moon and then put on our listening ears as we explore areas we’re most likely to hear them!
Amazing Vernal Pools
Saturday, April 27, 2019; 10:00-11:30
A vernal pool habitat is critical for certain species of salamanders and frogs, but they are often overlooked. We’ll visit a couple that we have at Prescott Farm and search for eggs of these mysterious creatures.
The Forest in Bloom
Saturday, May 25, 2019; 10:00-11:30
Our gardens are coming to life again and a treasure trove of lesser-known wildflowers are also popping up in the woods. Join us to discover these beautiful wonders of spring!
Spring at the Pond
Saturday, June 22, 2019; 10:00-11:30
Spring is in full swing and the pond is alive with all kinds of critters! There are the big ones you’d expect—turtles, frogs, ducks—but there is also a whole hidden world of tiny creatures that live in the water. Let’s see what we can find!
Saturday, July 27, 2019; 10:00-11:30
Pollinators are amazing! These insects, birds and other critters are essential for plants to produce the bounty of fruits and vegetables that we eat every day! Come learn more about them and things we can do to help protect them.
Plants to Plates
Saturday, August 17, 2019; 10:00-11:30
Summer is in full swing and green plants are everywhere! Join us to sample delicious edibles in the garden as well as wild foods from the forest and field!
Saturday, September 21, 2019; 10:00-11:30
Mushrooms are super cool! We’ll go on a mushroom hunt and find as many interesting varieties as we can as we learn about their important role in our ecosystem.
Creepy Crawly Myth Busters!
Saturday, October 19, 2019; 10:00-11:30
Bats, spiders and other so-called “creepy crawlies” often get a bad rap, but did you know that these critters all play a vital role in our ecosystem? Come discover more about them and hopefully change your view of them from “foe” to “friend!”
Fly Away or Stay?
Saturday, November 2, 2019; 10:00-11:30
There’s a chill in the air and animals are busy getting ready for winter. Who sticks around, who sleeps through, and who heads south for a sunny vacation? We’ll explore all the options!
Gifts of the Night Tree
Saturday, December 14, 2019; 10:00-11:30
Share the holiday spirit with our friends in nature! We’ll read the classic story The Night Tree, make treats for our furry and feathered friends, then venture into the woods to decorate our own “Night Tree.”
