SLA to Host Guided Hike on Wintering Animals

November 27 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) on Saturday, December 8th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm for a fun and engaging hike on wintering animals. This program explores the seasonal adaptations and behaviors of some species found in the Squam Watershed’s winter forests. Each winter, these species navigate forest ecosystems very different from the summer’s warm landscape. This low intensity hike will be about a mile long through Belknap Woods located in Center Harbor.

During this hike, participants will learn how animals prepare for the winter and how they utilize different habitats to survive. From frozen lakes to intense snowfalls, winter bring dramatic changes to landscapes and ecosystems across the region. Participants must be sure to bring proper winter hiking gear, warm layers, water, and snacks! All ages are welcome to attend and young children must be accompanied by parents/guardians. Registration is required. Space is limited to 12 people.

For more information, meeting location, or to sign up for this Adventure Ecology program, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other Adventure Ecology programs throughout the year. These free programs are open to the public and cover a variety of nature and conservation related topics. The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the LRCC AmeriCorps members at the SLA who perform important conservation work in support of the Association’s mission.

The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.
