Squam Rocks – Squam Lakes Association, Holderness NH

September 1 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Squam wasn’t built in a day—but how long did it take? Join Lakes Region Conservation Corps members Peter and Henry on Saturday, September 1st from 1–5 PM for a hike through the history of the Squam Lakes. Learn about the origins of the lakes’ bedrock hundreds of millions of years ago as well as the relatively recent glaciations that formed the lakes, and how the land still exhibits evidence of its complex geological past. We’ll identify some features you might have overlooked along the Squam Lakes Association’s most popular trails, and enjoy a long walk/hike in the woods.

Participants are asked to meet at the SLA’s campus in Holderness and will be transported to the trailhead from there. Appropriate hiking attire is recommended, including sturdy boots or shoes and suitable clothing, as well as plenty of water and any snacks you would like. Geology enthusiasts of all ages are welcome, although children must be accompanied by an adult, and prepared to walk about three miles. A brief section of the trail is fairly steep and eroded, which while geologically interesting, may pose an issue for people with limited mobility.

For more information, or to sign up for this Adventure Ecology, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other guided hikes and Adventure Ecology programming throughout the year. These free programs are open to the public and cover a variety of nature and conservation related topics. Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the SLA’s Lakes Region Conservation Corps AmeriCorps members, who perform important conservation work in support of the Association’s mission. The Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.
