Steven Wright

October 7, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Steven Wright

Steven Wright is a prototype comedian that many others continually try to follow.  One of four children, Wright was raised in Burlington, MA.  Upon graduating from Emerson College and holding a bevy of odd jobs, he attended an “open mike” audition and became a regular performer at Ding Ho’s Comedy Club and Chinese Restaurant in Cambridge, MA.

Wright was booked for his first “Tonight Show” appearance on Friday, August 6, 1982.  The comic soon found himself performing his off-beat routines on “Saturday Night Live,” “Late Night with David Letterman,” and numerous trips back to “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.” today, he is a regular guest with Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers and continues touring the U.S., Canada and overseas.

He expanded his comedy career to include comedy albums, film and television appearances.   In 1989, he won an Academy Award for Best Short Film for  “The Appointments of Dennis Jennings” in which he starred and co-wrote.  He has also appeared in numerous films, including “Desperately Seeking Susan,” Mike Meyers’ “So I Married An Axe Murderer,” Oliver Stone’s “Natural Born Killers,” and Nora Ephron’s “Mixed Nuts.”   He acted in the sitcom “Speechless”  and as a Mountie in “Canadian Bacon”, opposite the late John Candy.

Wright’s 2017 CD, “I Still Have A Pony”  earned him his second Grammy Award nomination for Best Comedy Album. In 2018, he was honored as the first inductee into The Boston Comedy Hall of Fame.

In 2013,  Wright received The Johnny Carson Comedy Legend Award,  given each year to a celebrated comedian who has been influenced by Carson in some way and who has left his or her own mark on the comedy world.
