Weed Watchers Program Launch: Learn How To Identify Invasive Aquatic Plants
The Squam Lakes Association routinely surveys and removes invasive Variable Milfoil in Little Squam and Big Squam Lakes. The SLA’s Lakes Region Conservation Corps members scuba dive to reach the plants and pull up as much of the invasive as possible. Over the years there has been significant decreases in variable milfoil distribution across the lakes. But it is still an ongoing issue and YOU could help out!

Join the SLA on Sunday, May 26th from 2pm to 5pm to learn how to identify aquatic invasives at this first Weed Watchers event of the season. The Weed Watchers volunteer program, started by the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services, enables anyone to help protect our lakes against the spread of invasive species by becoming an extra pair of eyes on the lake to spot and report potential invasions. The event will consist of a training on how to identify variable milfoil and other invasive aquatic species, and how to differentiate them from native species, all from the comfort of a kayak or canoe. After this training session, you will be able to look for invasive species like variable milfoil on your own and know how to report sightings on Squam as an official Weed Watcher!

This event will be hosted at the Squam Lakes Association at 534 US Route 3 in Holderness, NH 03245.The SLA will be providing kayaks for use, as well as the necessary equipment for surveying. However, you are welcome to bring your own as well as any questions you have.

Registration: Registration is highly encouraged for this free event.
