This year’s spring story is at Whitten Woods in Ashland. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier\, VT and developed in collaboration with the VT Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition and the Kellogg Hubbard Library. \nWe hope you enjoy this story by Akiko Miyakoshi where you follow the journey of a young girl\, Kikko\, as she travels through the woods to bring a pie to her grandmother. Put yourself in Kikko’s shoes as she braves the forest and stumbles into an unexpected party. You may even meet some of the characters Kikko meets on your own walk. Think about which friendly critters might be following along as you are reading the story! \nAfter exploring the story along the trail be sure to visit the Ashland Town Library for a fun craft activity that goes along with the book! \nThe StoryWalk® will be up from Friday\, March 1st – Tuesday\, April 30th. \nA HUGE THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS & PARTNERS: \nInnisfree Bookshop in Meredith\, NH generously offered a discount on the books for this StoryWalk®. They have copies available if you enjoyed the story and want to read it again and again. Support your local bookstores! \nHolderness Free Library partners with the Squam Lakes Association for our winter StoryWalk®. \nThe Squam Lakes Natural Science Center offers a variety of live animal programs year-round and has spectacular live animal exhibits May 1- November 1 so visit their website to see what great programs they have and to learn more about NH’s wildlife! \nAshland Town Library donated the books and created a fun craft inspired by the book. Then sign up for this introductory Bird ID course with LRCC Meg on March 31st from 9:30 AM – 1:30 PM. We will be hiking along the easy 2.2 mile loop trail at the Pine Hill Conservation Area. Using a variety of methods we will learn and teach each other about the birds we are hearing and hopefully see as we walk through the woods. Participants are welcome to bring ID books\, binoculars\, and a phone equipped with the Cornell Lab’s Merlin Bird ID app. If Participants have their own binoculars to use during the hike that would be great\, but not required as sound identification is the most common way to ID birds. Participants should bring enough water and food for the duration of the program\, we will have a lunch break as well. \nParticipants should also be sure to have appropriate attire and layering for winter hiking\, extra layers\, and comfortable water resistant hiking shoes as well as snowshoes and/or microspikes depending on conditions. The SLA can provide snowshoes & microspikes for up to six participants. \nFor more information\, or to sign up for this free guided hike\, visit the SLA website (squamlakes.org) or contact the SLA directly (603-968-7336). The SLA also offers other guided hikes and Adventure Ecology programming throughout the year. These free programs are open to the public and cover a variety of nature and conservation related topics. The Adventure Ecology programs are presented by the LRCC AmeriCorps members at the SLA who perform important conservation work in support of the Association’s mission.  \nThe Squam Lakes Association is dedicated to conserving for public benefit the natural beauty\, peaceful character and resources of the watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners the SLA promotes the protection\, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes\, mountains\, forests\, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes Region.
