SUMMARY:Pontine Theatre: The White Heron & The Star Splitter - Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm\, Tamworth NH
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this unique theatrical event!\nWe are pleased to welcome New Hampshire’s Pontine Theatre to Tamworth with their original and intimate staging of A White Heron by Sarah Orne Jewett and a recitation of Robert Frost’s poem The Star Splitter. \n\nTWO RURAL-LIFE OBSERVATIONS \nSarah Orne Jewett’s A White Heron\, published in 1886\nThis short story is about Silvia\, a young city girl who is living with her gandmother in the country. Sylvia is searching for her cow in the woods when she hears a whistle and hides in the bushes. A hunter spots her and asks to stay at her grandmother’s house. Sylvia is initially reluctant to take him in\, but he is polite and offers to pay her $10 if she tells him where to find the white heron he’s spotted in the area. Sylvia eventually warms up to the hunter\, but is horrified when she sees him kill birds. She must decide whether to tell him where to find the heron’s nest. \nThis is Pontine’s fifth staging of Sarah Orne Jewett’s stories. Born in 1849 in South Berwick\, Maine\, Jewett was the daughter of the town doctor. As a child\, she often accompanied him on his rounds to rural farms in the area. She would sit and listen to family members talking together while waiting for her father. She came to love the wit and wisdom of these country folks and they became the subject of her writings as an adult. \nRobert Frost’s The Star Splitter\, published in 1923\nThis poem explores the conflict between societal expectations and individual passions. A farmer’s reckless pursuit of a telescope leads to the loss of his farm and home. This loss initially evokes ridicule from the townspeople. However\, their subsequent contemplation reveals the importance of forgiveness and understanding. Frost uses the image of a telescope\, “a star-splitter\,” as a symbol of the farmer’s unconventional path toward cosmic understanding. \nJewett (1849–1909) and Frost (1874–1963) were writing\, published and widely appreciated within the lifetimes of the Drs. Remick. \n\n“Pontine Theatre is a small miracle. The theatre has used puppets\, mime and stagecraft to convey visions of the past to modern audiences for more than 35 years. Artistic Directors Margueritte Mathews and Greg Gathers conspire to fascinate the contemporary mind with original works based on the stories and literature of New England. There’s really nothing else like it anywhere.” ~ NH Magazine \n  \nTickets: Cost $10 each. Members will receive a $2 refund after purchase.\nFor ages 14 and above; seating is limited to 40 attendees.\nThis production is 45 minutes long. Interaction with the artists and viewing of the “toy theatre” is possibe after the performance. Light refreshments will be served. \n\n\nPURCHASE NOW \n\n\nRegistration and Cancellation Policies \n  \nThis event is part of our Spring at the Farmstead schedule. \n  \nABOUT PONTINE THEATRE\nFrom the Theatre’s website \n“Since 1977\, Pontine Theatre (shown in the top image) has been an active particpant in the development of actor-based theatre\, creating work that is engaging\, innovative and original. Co-Artistic Directors\, Marguerite Mathews and Gregory Gathers\, have produced over fifty original works. Creating and performing these works\, Pontine has introduced their unique form of theatre to audiences throughout New England\, transforming audience interest in gestural theatre\, puppetry\, toy theatre and storytelling into enthusiasm for this distinctive synthesis of forms. \n“In choosing projects for our at-home performance series and subsequent tours\, we endeavor to reflect the interests of the audiences we serve. We are fortunate to live and work in a region with a particularly rich history and a citizenry deeply interested in this legacy. As other cultural organizations work to preserve historic landmarks and significant architecture\, we have dedicated many of our performances to celebrating classic works of New England literature: some well-known\, others obscure gems. We also create works based on original research that explore various aspects of New England culture and history. \n“…Our intimately-scaled chamber productions are an ideal fit for the small town audiences…. The intimate scale of our productions reflects an aesthetic choice to magnify the theatrical power and artistic integrity of our wok through concentrated attention to the details of each element comprising the whole.” \nRemick Country Doctor Museum & Farm / 58 Cleveland Hill Road / Tamworth NH

SUMMARY:Guided Vernal Pool Hike with Newfound Lake Region Association - Sugarloaf Ridge-Goose Pond Conservation Area\, Bristol NH
DESCRIPTION:Join Newfound Lake Region Association (NLRA) Education & Outreach Manager Mirka Zapletal for a spring hike Friday\, May 16th in Sugarloaf Ridge-Goose Pond Conservation Area at 1pm looking for the spring breeding pools used by frogs and salamanders. On the first warm\, rainy night of spring local amphibians are on the move to find mates and lay eggs. Weeks later\, their efforts have paid off\, but there is limited time for this year’s young to grow before the vernal pools they depend on dry up. Participants will hike the Goose Pond Trail and Goose Pond-Elwell Link\, an approximately 3 mile hike with some steep or muddy sections\, looking for vernal pools\, the amphibians who use them\, and other local wildlife. Registration is required and space is limited.  Register online at NewfoundLake.org/events or call 603-744-8689. \nNLRA works to protect the habitats and high-quality waters of Newfound Lake and its watershed\, maintaining a healthy and diverse ecosystem.  Along with educational programming like guided hikes and paddles\, NLRA monitors water quality\, conserves land\, manages stormwater pollution\, and monitors for invasive species.  For more than 50 years NLRA has been protecting Newfound Lake\, and the results of that conservation are as clear as Newfound’s water.  You can learn more about NLRA’s initiatives at NewfoundLake.org. \nSugarloaf Ridge-Goose Pond Conservation Area\n60 West Shore Rd\, Bristol\, NH

SUMMARY:Marion Miles Remick Bird Hike - Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm\, Tamworth NH
DESCRIPTION:Experience Remick from the “chirp” seats.\nDuring this guided walk\, you’ll discover the important role the Remick property has played in the lives of migratory birds. \nMarion Miles Remick (1906–1980) lived on this site from her marriage to Doc Remick in 1929 until her death in 1980. In addition to her interests in flower gardening\, cats\, and horse racing\, Marion was an avid bird watcher. \nMarion’s interest in birding may have been encouraged by the grounds where she once lived\, which provide a sweeping landscape and a variety of bird habitats\, including forests\, fields and open water. Avid birders have spotted at least 84 bird species on the Remick grounds — see a sample list on eBird. Come and learn more about Marion and the birds of Remick Farm with your interpretive guide while hiking across the expansive property. \nThe anniversary of Marion’s birthday takes place on May 28 — 119 years ago. This activity is one way we honor her contribution to our site’s history\, often overshadowed by our wider story. \nActivity length: 60 minutes.\nTerrain: gravel paths\, uneven grassy fields\, inclines.\nBinoculars are recommended; dress for outdoor weather and farm conditions underfoot. \nFREE for members\, $5 suggested donation for nonmembers.\nFor ages 16+\, ages 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult.\nFor more information\, call (603) 323-7591. \nThis activity is part of our Spring on the Farm schedule. \n \nMarion’s birding guides — complete with handwritten notes — and binoculars can be seen in her office area of the mid-century-style apartment she shared with her husband\, Doc Remick. \nRELATED ACTIVITIES\n \nA deeper dive into Marion’s world: \n+ Visit the Marion Miles Remick Memorial Garden\, enclosed by a white picket fence and located in front of the Museum Barn. \n+ Walk through the modest 2nd-floor apartment Marion shared with Doc Remick for 51 years (including her small kitchen—complete with a wood stove\, her hallway office\, and the handpainted “wallpaper” she commissioned for their den). The apartment is located in the Museum Center. \nRemick Country Doctor Museum & Farm / 58 Cleveland Hill Road / Tamworth NH \n

SUMMARY:Event is Full - Wait List Available - Volunteer: Water Quality Training - Squam Lakes Association\, Holderness NH
DESCRIPTION:The Squam Lakes Association’s water-quality data set is the oldest in the northeast\, and we need YOU to help keep it going. Volunteer water quality monitoring is a great way to get involved in the Squam community\, get outside\, and contribute to important research. Join LRCC members Hunter and Carolina to learn how to conduct water sampling. \nThe purpose of this training is to get folks out on the water and show them an example site. We will meet at the SLA headquarters and then take a water vessel out to Piper’s Cove. After this training\, volunteers will be ready to perform water monitoring on their own and return data to the SLA. Attendance to this training does not mean a commitment to long-term volunteer monitoring\, but we encourage everyone to come learn the process and consider joining this program\, which depends on volunteer support to function. \n\n\nMinors must be accompanied by an adult\, and registration is required for this event. \nThis event is now full\, but you may sign up below to join the wait list. We will notify you for future volunteer training days\, and if one of the registered participants cannot make this event\, we will also contact you to see if you are available to fill their spot. \n\nJoin the wait list\n\n\nSquam Lakes Association / 534 US Route 3 / Holderness NH \n
