Loon Cruises focus on Common Loon conservation\, biology\, and monitoring. A Science Center naturalist joins a LPC biologist who guides the tour and discusses the work LPC does across the state and on Squam to protect these extraordinary birds. The cruise route is chosen to maximize Loon observations. \nCruises are 90 minutes long and on canopied pontoon boats. New Hampshire State law requires youth ages 12 and under to wear a life jacket on board. \nNot recommended for ages 5 and under. \nBinoculars will be available free of charge or you may bring your own. Dress appropriately for the weather and remember that it is cooler on the lake. Be prepared for rain.\nPlease arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your cruise departure time. \nIf we need to cancel your cruise due to weather we will contact you to reschedule or issue you a full refund. DESCRIPTION:Pink Floyd’s iconic album ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’\, originally released in March 1973\, turns 50\, and what more fitting a place to celebrate it and experience it than in a Planetarium\, through the music set to visuals. With the help of modern technology\, the idea of a show combining breath-taking views of the solar system and beyond\, played out to 42 minutes of The Dark Side Of The Moon in surround sound\, has been embraced by the band. NSC Creative have led the visual production efforts\, working closely with Pink Floyd’s long time creative collaborator Aubrey Powell from Hipgnosis.\nEach song has a different theme; some futuristically looking forward and some a retro acknowledgment to Pink Floyd’s visual history\, all relating to a time and space experience\, embracing up to the minute technology that only a Planetarium can offer. DESCRIPTION:Today’s Adventure Ecology:\n\nSoon enough\, anglers will return to Squam Lake by water and by shore to target large and small-mouth bass for their spring spawn. But have you ever wondered why these fish start bedding now? Or how they spent their winter? Come join us at the Squam Lakes Association on June 28\, from 8:30 – 11am\, for a roughly 2-mile kayak trip around Piper’s Cove and learn about how the seasons affect fish behavior. Participants will learn when and where to find fish for their angling or viewing pleasure\, and we’ll also discuss the habits of other fish species that live throughout the lake’s water column. \nParticipants should meet at the SLA building at 8am\, then we will head down to the docks and outfit you with kayaks\, paddles\, and life vests. We won’t be fishing on this outing\, but you’re sure to gain a better understanding of how to “think like a fish” for the next time you cast a line. This is a great time of year – and time of day – to hopefully spot some big bass on their spawning beds. \nAll ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by adults. \n\nRegister now\n\n\n\n\nWhat to bring\nPlease come prepared with plenty of water\, snacks\, and sunscreen\, as we’ll be out on the water for a few hours. SLA will provide you life vests\, but if you prefer to bring your own\, that is fine too.\n\n\nMeet this week’s guides\n\nHunter Hine is an LRCC member serving as a Volunteer Program Assistant with the SLA for the 2025 season. He hails from Baltimore County\, Maryland\, where he previously worked in journalism and public affairs. He loves wading into streams and waving around a fly-fishing rod for hours. Sometimes\, he catches a fish that way. \nFaith O’Toole is from Albany\, NY\, and graduated in May 2024 from the SUNY ESF with a Bachelor’s degree in Aquatic and Fisheries Science. In 2023\, Fay studied abroad in the Turks and Caicos Islands\, where she found a love for scientific diving. You may even spot a loon chick riding on its mother’s back!
