DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets  \n $43.65 – $64.65\n\n\n\nOctober 1\, 2026 7:30 PM \n\nDoors Open: 6:00 PM \n\n\nIn Big Band history\, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is recognized as one of the best all-around dance bands. It could swing with the best of them\, and no other band could come close to Tommy’s when it came to playing ballads. Tommy Dorsey\, “The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing”\, was a master at creating warm\, sentimental\, and always musical moods – at superb dancing and listening tempos. Tommy sustained these moods through the arrangements of the likes of Paul Weston\, Axel Stordahl and Sy Oliver\, and he showcased singers who could project them brilliantly.\nJack Leonard sang with the band for about four years\, recording such fine sides as “Dedicated To You”\, “If It’s The Last Thing I do”\, “Little White Lies”\, “You Taught Me To Love Again”\, “Once In A While”\, and\, probably the most famous of all\, “Marie”.\nFrank Sinatra’s career blossomed with Dorsey\, and\, with Sinatra’s vocals\, the band became more successful than ever. Frank had often admitted that listening to Tommy helped him develop his phrasing and breathing\, along with his musical taste and knowledge.\nSy Oliver infused the band with a new musical spirit. It was a gentler version of the rocking\, rhythmic sounds that he had created for Jimmy Lunceford\, toned down somewhat and played with more precision by the Dorsey Band. These original tunes included “Easy Does It”\, “Quiet Please”\, “Sing High”\, “Yes\, Indeed”\, “Swingin’ On Nothing”\, “Well\, Git It”\, and “Opus No 1”. Oliver also had a unique way of approaching a straight pop tune\, injecting a soft\, two-beat feeling into. He did this with resounding success in such arrangements as “What Can I Say After I Say I’m Sorry? “\, “For You”\, “Swanee River”\, “Mandy”\, “Make Up Your Mind”\, “Chicago”\, and “On The Sunny Side Of The Street”.\nThe vocalists worked both individually and together\, turning out several hits of superior quality. There was Sinatra’s “This Love of Mine”\, Jo Stafford’s “Embraceable You”\, the Pied Pipers’ and Sinatra’s “There Are Such Things”\, “Just As Though You Were Here”\, “Street Of Dreams”\, and “Oh\, Look At Me Now”. Their biggest hit of all\, the one that established vocal groups forever\, was “I’ll Never Smile Again”.\nThe Band was at its best in this decade. In the summer of 1941\, it outranked every other band to finish first in one of the most indicative of all popularity polls\, Martin Block’s Make Believe Ballroom contest. By late 1946\, it was becoming apparent that the band business was having problems. In December 1946\, eight top bandleaders announced they were calling it quits – Woody Herman\, Benny Goodman\, Harry James\, Les Brown\, Jack Teagarden\, Benny Carter\, Ina Ray Hutton and Tommy Dorsey. Essentially\, this was the official end of the Big Band Era. However\, it was Tommy Dorsey who\, in the years immediately following\, fought the case of the big bands with words and action. Less than two years later\, he was fronting a formidable new group.\nThe music world lost Tommy at an early age\, but his legacy of great music has transcended time. DESCRIPTION:Visitors can look forward to spectacular views of Lake Winnipesaukee and daily tours of the restored Lucknow Mansion. This year\, Castle in the Clouds will debut a new exhibition\, From Private Estate to Public Treasure: Lucknow after Thomas and Olive Plant. This exhibit features stories\, photographs\, and memorabilia of the various owners of the Lucknow Estate before the Castle Preservation Society (CPS) was founded in 2006 to manage the estate as a public attraction and museum. \nThis year marks the 20th anniversary of CPS\, which is responsible for the ongoing care and restoration of the Lucknow Mansion and Estate. “This is a pivotal year for the Castle Preservation Society since we are concluding our current strategic plan and continuing to plan for the future of Castle in the Clouds\,” said Charles Clark\, Executive Director of CPS. “Our entire team of staff\, board and volunteers are extremely proud of all we have accomplished in the past 20 years\, including the significant renovations to the Lucknow Estate which are either complete or scheduled for completion this year.” \nIn 2025\, the U.S. Department of the Interior designated the Lucknow Estate as a National Historic Landmark (NHL). An NHL designation is the highest federal recognition of a property’s historical\, architectural or archaeological significance. This designation for the Lucknow Estate is a testament to the efforts of CPS and the Lakes Region Conservation Trust to care for the property. \nThroughout this season\, Castle in the Clouds will offer 200+ public program sessions\, including classes and workshops\, a presentation on the history of Ossipee Park\, a production of Romeo and Juliet from Advice to the Players\, and many other community events. The full calendar of programs and events can be found on the Castle in the Clouds website. \nThe 2026 season runs from May 23 to October 25. The property is open to visitors daily. Guests are encouraged to enter the property via the Historic Entrance. The original driveway to the Estate was repaved at the end of 2025\, and provides an amazing introductory experience to any Castle visit. Onsite tickets are available for purchase beginning at 10:00 am daily\, or online tickets can be purchased in advance. The Gift Shop\, Carriage House and Exhibit Gallery open at 10:00 am and trolley service to the mansion begins at 10:15 am. Lunch is served in the Carriage House restaurant daily from 11:30 am until 3:30 pm. In addition to self-guided mansion tours\, a limited number of tickets for guided tours of Lucknow Mansion and the Lucknow Mansion Basement are also available for those seeking an in-depth and behind-the-scenes experience. DESCRIPTION:  \nFROM SAILS TO ATOMS: THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD \nTEMPORARY EXHIBIT \n\n\nIn celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States\, the Wright Museum will be highlighting one of New England’s most enduring contributions to the nation’s history: the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. \nOfficially established as a federal navy yard in 1800\, but the home of shipbuilding as early as the 1600s\, PNSY has a long and storied history. In it’s early days\, notable ships such as the USS Washington and USS Congress were built there. In 1855\, the shipyard was also responsible for the overhaul of “Old Ironsides\,” the USS Constitution. \nThe first submarine built at the shipyard was the USS L-8 in 1917. During World War II\, the shipyard’s production of submarines was prolific\, tallying more than 70 subs\, including a record 4 launched in a single day. Founded Dec. 1\, 1941\, to mobilize the nation’s civilian aviation resources for national defense service\, CAP has evolved into a premier public service organization that is a cost-effective force multiplier for Air Force-assigned missions. \nThis special exhibit will highlight the role of CAP in civil defense\, emergency response\, and other missions throughout its history. Featuring historic objects\, videos and interactives\, this exhibit is great for all ages. \nTo dedicate the exhibit\, a special ceremony will take place at 10:00am on May 16\, 2026. Join us for a CAP flyover\, speeches by NH Wing Commander Col. Nic Goupil and Northeast Region Historian Lt. Col. Keith Raymond\, bagpipes by Capt. Ethan Cray\, and more!
