SUMMARY:Trails for Walking & Winter Activities at Canterbury Shaker Village\, Canterbury NH
DESCRIPTION:Canterbury Shaker Village in Canterbury\, New Hampshire\, features about 4 miles of walking trails with 5 mill ponds winding across its nearly 700-acre historic property.\nKey Trail Information\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPopular Routes: Includes the Mill Pond Trail (0.8 miles) and the Meadow Pond Trail (1.7 miles).\n\n\n\n\nLandscape: The paths meander through peaceful forests\, open fields\, and past historic ponds.\n\n\n\n\nTrail Map: You can view or download the official path layout directly from the Canterbury Shaker Village Trail Map page.\n\n\n\n\nAccess: Exploring the grounds and trails is part of the experience at the Canterbury Shaker Village Official Site.\n\nThe Village grounds and trails are open every day\, year-round from dawn to dusk\, and free to visit. Maps are available at the kiosk under the breezeway adjacent to the parking area. You can view the Village Map and Trail Map online ahead of your visit. \nThe best marked trail takes visitors around Turning Mill Pond\, where they can see the historic Pump House\, beaver dams and human dams\, and enjoy the flora and fauna of this beautiful and serene site. The trail takes about 30 minutes to walk. \n\n \n  \n\nWhile the historic buildings are closed for regular museum tours during the winter months\, the sprawling property transforms into a quiet winter wonderland. The site features nearly 700 acres of protected forests\, open pastures\, and scenic mill ponds under permanent conservation easement\, offering an incredibly peaceful and historic backdrop for winter recreation.\n\n\n\nWhat to Expect on the Trails\n \n\n\n\n\nUngroomed Trails: The village provides 4  miles of nature trails. However\, trails are not mechanically groomed for cross-country skiing. It is entirely a “make your own tracks” or backcountry Nordic skiing experience. If you love uncrowded\, pristine snow\, this is a gem.\n\n \n\n\n\nFree and Open to the Public: The grounds and trails are open year-round from dawn to dusk at no charge. You can easily park and head right out into the fields.\n\n \n\n\n\nTrail Layout: Popular winter loops include the short\, family-friendly Turning Mill Pond Loop (about 1.7 miles) and the Carding Mill Trail. Both options take you past scenic historic stone dams\, frozen ponds\, and snow-laden woods.\n\n \n\n\n\nNo On-Site Rentals: There are no ski or snowshoe rentals available at the property. You must bring your own gear.\n\nCanterbury Shaker Village /  288 Shaker Rd.  /  Canterbury NH

SUMMARY:Art Talk at the Lakes Region Art Gallery - Tilton NH
DESCRIPTION:Join us every month on the 3rd Monday at 6-8 PM for an engaging Art Talk at the Lakes Region Art Gallery. These informal gatherings are open to everyone—artists\, art lovers\, and the creatively curious alike. Come listen\, share ideas\, ask questions\, and be part of the conversation around art in a welcoming\, relaxed setting. All are welcome! \nCheck the website for more detail on speakers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis Month October 19\, 2026 at 6-8pm \nMartha Aucoin presents \n“The Art of Scrimshaw\,” a hands-on look at a historic maritime craft\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMartha Aucoin\, a Laconia artist with family roots in Nova Scotia and\nshipbuilding will share the history and techniques of scrimshaw in an Art Talk titled “The\nArt of Scrimshaw.” Guests will hear how the craft developed and will be invited to try it\nthemselves\, scribing a simple ship\, flower\, or personal memory onto a discarded piano\nkey provided at the presentation.\nThe speaker first learned scrimshaw while operating a nautical gift shop in Charleston\,\nSouth Carolina\, and went on to work as a scrimshander. Over the years the work has\nincluded ships\, homes\, flowers\, pets\, and portraits\, engraved on ivory\, piano keys\, and\nsmall ivory pieces. Oil painting is now the primary medium\, though tall ships still appear\nin her work.\nAn early interest in art led to recognition in high school and study at Plymouth State\nUniversity under Professor Drurup. After years devoted to family\, the artist returned to\npainting\, studying with Mount Washington Valley artist Bob Gordon and\, more recently\,\nplein air oil painting with Laureen Wondoloski\, a member of the Copley Society of Art\nand the Guild of Boston Artists.\nMartha is a member of the Mount Washington Valley Arts Association and the Lakes\nRegion Art Association. Work has been exhibited in Tilton and Conway\, New\nHampshire. Landscapes are the main focus\, along with animals\, homes\, and occasional\nportraits.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLakes Region Art Association Gallery / Exit 20 off I-93  120 Laconia Rd\, Tanger Outlets Suite #300 / Tilton NH
