DESCRIPTION:As raptors begin their incredible annual migration to wintering grounds\, Squam Lakes\nNatural Science Center will host its Raptor Migration Celebration on Saturday\, September 19\, from 10:00 am to\n4:00 pm. The all-ages event will give visitors an opportunity to learn about raptor migration\, observe live birds of\nprey\, and participate in a community science project tracking migrating hawks.\nThe event will feature three Birds of Prey presentations by the Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) at\n11:00 a.m.\, 12:00 p.m.\, and 1:00 p.m. VINS will introduce visitors to live raptor ambassadors and explore the\nseasonal movements of birds of prey\, including where raptor species travel for the winter\, how long their\nmigrations take\, and why they make these annual journeys. Each presentation will include a flight\ndemonstration featuring a raptor.\nVisitors can also participate in a Hawk Watch\, helping document migrating raptors as they pass through the\nregion. Participants will scan the skies for hawks and other birds of prey\, recording their observations and\nlearning to identify different species. Kids’ activities will give budding ornithologists a fun\, hands-on introduction\nto raptor identification. Data collected during the Hawk Watch will be submitted to the Hawk Migration\nAssociation’s North American raptor migration database\, contributing to a broader understanding of raptor\npopulations and migration patterns and helping inform conservation efforts.\n“Our annual Raptor Migration Celebration is a wonderful way to connect people of all ages with wildlife\,\nconservation\, and the wondrous journeys raptors take every fall\,” said Iain MacLeod\, Executive Director of\nSquam Lakes Natural Science Center. “We are thrilled to welcome our partners from VINS to share their\nincredible raptor ambassadors and expertise with our community.”\nThe Raptor Migration Celebration is included with regular trail admission. DESCRIPTION:  \nFROM SAILS TO ATOMS: THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD \nTEMPORARY EXHIBIT \n\n\nIn celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States\, the Wright Museum will be highlighting one of New England’s most enduring contributions to the nation’s history: the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. \nOfficially established as a federal navy yard in 1800\, but the home of shipbuilding as early as the 1600s\, PNSY has a long and storied history. In it’s early days\, notable ships such as the USS Washington and USS Congress were built there. In 1855\, the shipyard was also responsible for the overhaul of “Old Ironsides\,” the USS Constitution. \nThe first submarine built at the shipyard was the USS L-8 in 1917. During World War II\, the shipyard’s production of submarines was prolific\, tallying more than 70 subs\, including a record 4 launched in a single day. Founded Dec. 1\, 1941\, to mobilize the nation’s civilian aviation resources for national defense service\, CAP has evolved into a premier public service organization that is a cost-effective force multiplier for Air Force-assigned missions. \nThis special exhibit will highlight the role of CAP in civil defense\, emergency response\, and other missions throughout its history. Featuring historic objects\, videos and interactives\, this exhibit is great for all ages. \nTo dedicate the exhibit\, a special ceremony will take place at 10:00am on May 16\, 2026. Join us for a CAP flyover\, speeches by NH Wing Commander Col. Nic Goupil and Northeast Region Historian Lt. Col. Keith Raymond\, bagpipes by Capt. Ethan Cray\, and more! Levesque’s paintings are more than just painted representations on canvas\, they are love songs to nature and an invitation to the viewer to take a thoughtful journey into how we perceive our surroundings. \nTracy Levesque is a New England based fine artist who was born in the beautiful Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts and is currently working out of her studio at Western Avenue Studios in the Merrimack Valley in Lowell\, Massachusetts. Levesque graduated from Brandeis University with honors in Theater Arts and English and American Literature.
