SUMMARY:From Sails to Atoms: The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Exhibit - Wright Museum of World War II\, Wolfeboro NH
DESCRIPTION:  \nFROM SAILS TO ATOMS: THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD \nTEMPORARY EXHIBIT \n\n\nIn celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States\, the Wright Museum will be highlighting one of New England’s most enduring contributions to the nation’s history: the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. \nOfficially established as a federal navy yard in 1800\, but the home of shipbuilding as early as the 1600s\, PNSY has a long and storied history. In it’s early days\, notable ships such as the USS Washington and USS Congress were built there. In 1855\, the shipyard was also responsible for the overhaul of “Old Ironsides\,” the USS Constitution. \nThe first submarine built at the shipyard was the USS L-8 in 1917. During World War II\, the shipyard’s production of submarines was prolific\, tallying more than 70 subs\, including a record 4 launched in a single day. In the Cold War era\, the yard was also home to the construction of the revolutionary USS Albacore\, the first teardrop-hull submarine. \nFeaturing vivid images and unique interactive activities\, this special exhibit will explore all of this history\, and more! \nExhibit runs May 1 – October 31\, 2026. \nPhoto:  The USS Shad is launched at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on April 15\, 1942. Kearsarge Indian Museum is open Monday through Saturday\, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (guided tours at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.)\, and Sunday\, 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (guided tours at 1:30 p.m.) For more information about the Mt. Please call the museum or email education@indianmuseum.org for group tours. \nYou can purchase tickets in person at the time of your visit or online if you prefer. Visit here to buy tickets online. \nThe Mt. Kearsarge Indian Museum is open for the 2026 season with expanded accessibility improvements and a full slate of programs highlighting Native American history\, art\, and culture. \nHeadlining the season is a new exhibit\, Quills & Beads: Adornment that Adapts\, curated by Sterling Gross. Tracing the evolution of Native American adornment—from traditional porcupine quillwork to the intricate beadwork that emerged following the introduction of European glass beads—the exhibit features rare pieces on public display for the first time. \n“Our new exhibit invites visitors to look closely at the artistry\, but also at the adaptation and resilience these pieces represent\,” said Executive Director Andrew Bullock. “Quillwork and beadwork are living traditions\, and we’re honored to share this collection with our community and with visitors traveling the Museum Trail this season.” \nIn addition to the new exhibit\, the museum has completed several accessibility upgrades ahead of opening day. The Medicine Woods Trail—an outdoor walking path featuring plants traditionally used by Native peoples for food\, medicine\, and craft—is now fully accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. Renovations to on-site restrooms and pathways have also been completed to better serve visitors of all abilities. \nMt. Kearsarge Indian Museum is one of nearly two dozen museums on the NH Heritage Museum Trail\, which features members in the Lakes Region\, White Mountains\, Dartmouth-Sunapee Region\, Merrimack Valley\, and Seacoast. To learn more about the NH Heritage Museum Trail\, visit nhmuseumtrail.org. \nMt. Kearsarge Indian Museum / 18 Highlawn Rd. / Warner NH \n603-456-2600

All are welcome! \nCheck the website for more detail on speakers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis Month October 19\, 2026 at 6-8pm \nMartha Aucoin presents \n“The Art of Scrimshaw\,” a hands-on look at a historic maritime craft\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMartha Aucoin\, a Laconia artist with family roots in Nova Scotia and\nshipbuilding will share the history and techniques of scrimshaw in an Art Talk titled “The\nArt of Scrimshaw.” Guests will hear how the craft developed and will be invited to try it\nthemselves\, scribing a simple ship\, flower\, or personal memory onto a discarded piano\nkey provided at the presentation.\nThe speaker first learned scrimshaw while operating a nautical gift shop in Charleston\,\nSouth Carolina\, and went on to work as a scrimshander. Over the years the work has\nincluded ships\, homes\, flowers\, pets\, and portraits\, engraved on ivory\, piano keys\, and\nsmall ivory pieces. Oil painting is now the primary medium\, though tall ships still appear\nin her work.\nAn early interest in art led to recognition in high school and study at Plymouth State\nUniversity under Professor Drurup. After years devoted to family\, the artist returned to\npainting\, studying with Mount Washington Valley artist Bob Gordon and\, more recently\,\nplein air oil painting with Laureen Wondoloski\, a member of the Copley Society of Art\nand the Guild of Boston Artists.\nMartha is a member of the Mount Washington Valley Arts Association and the Lakes\nRegion Art Association. Work has been exhibited in Tilton and Conway\, New\nHampshire. Landscapes are the main focus\, along with animals\, homes\, and occasional\nportraits.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLakes Region Art Association Gallery / Exit 20 off I-93  120 Laconia Rd\, Tanger Outlets Suite #300 / Tilton NH
