The Castle in the Clouds, also known as Lucknow is a 16 room mountaintop mansion in Moultonborough, New Hampshire that is owned and operated by the Castle Preservation Society. There are stunning views overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee and the Ossipee Mountains and they offer fun activities along with leisurely tours through the Lucknow.
Start your tour through the estate by trolley taking the same roads that Thomas and Olive Plant traveled back in the early 1900s. During this tour, you will learn about the story of Thomas Plant as well as the history of the arts and crafts style building. Once you have arrived at the mansion, you will be able to take a self-guided tour and special activities are available to children as an educational and exciting way to explore the mansion. The mansion has everything vintage from Olive Plant’s closet to the needle showers.
Castle in the Clouds also has an Art Gallery located in the Carriage House. The Art Gallery has a variety of exhibits throughout the season. Each exhibit theme provides guests with intellectual and beautiful works of art from local artists, university students works, and private collections. While there take a hike! The Castle in the Clouds has over 28 miles of hiking trails that are maintained by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. Leisurely walk along the cascading waterfalls, and end at the largest waterfall, Falls of Son. Or, take a more advanced hike to experience the amazing views of the Ossipee Mountains. You could spend the whole day hiking with the entire family.
After working up an appetite, visit the Carriage House Restaurant to enjoy a variety of delicious lunch items, from sandwiches to full entrees. Looking for a quick bite to eat? Stop by the Cones in the clouds located in the Meadows of Shannon Pond, and enjoy a variety of yummy treats including light snacks, small meals, beverages, Glifford’s ice cream and more! Or, bring a picnic! Castle in the Clouds has several picnic tables located throughout the property. Some tables are located in the grove across the gift shop, or the meadows by Shannon Pond or under some trees to create a shady cool area to enjoy your meal with your family.
