Power and Propulsion Exhibit(Showcasing A Unique Fleet of Ice Boats) – NH Boat Museum, Moultonborough NH

September 14 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
This season, we are thrilled to showcase a unique fleet of ice boats as part of our Power and Propulsion exhibit!  These sleek wind-driven vessels are a passion of NHBM volunteers Charlie Silfvenius and Anne Louise Rowe, who were instrumental in the design of this year’s display.

Ice sailboats, powered by the wind, can achieve speeds significantly higher than the wind speed at which they are sailing. This is largely due to the friction-free surface of ice, which can allow the boat to sail up to 5 times the wind speed.

A few fun facts:

  • Ice boats do not have keels but instead sit on “runners” or skates
  • Top speed have reached 140 mph
  • Ice boats have no brakes. To stop, they turn into the wind and release the tension on the sail

Visit the Museum this summer to discover the world of ice boating and explore the many fascinating ways boats are propelled!
