Shhh… The Birds Are Listening: Explore How Noise Pollution Affects Wildlife – Newfound Conservation Alliance – Grey Rocks Conservation Center, Hebron NH

November 4 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am

Birds rely on sound to find mates, warn of predators, and
communicate with their young. But what happens when their songs and calls are
drowned out by traffic, construction, boats, and other human-made noise?
The Newfound Conservation Alliance (formerly Newfound Lake Region Association)
invites the community to explore these questions at its next Let’s Talk Nature gathering,
“Shhh… The Birds Are Listening,” on Wednesday, November 4, from 10:30 to
11:30 a.m. at the Grey Rocks Conservation Center, 178 North Shore Road in Hebron.
A study led by University of Michigan researchers examined more than 150 studies
involving 160 bird species across six continents, finding that human-generated noise
can affect birds’ behavior, physiology, and reproduction. The discussion will explore
what scientists are learning about noise pollution and its effects on migratory birds, with
a closer look at what these findings could mean for wildlife in New Hampshire.
Participants will consider how birds respond to noisy environments, which sounds
matter most, and how communities can reduce noise to create better conditions for
wildlife.
Let’s Talk Nature is designed as an informal, welcoming conversation rather than a
formal lecture. Participants receive a short article to read beforehand, then gather to
share observations, questions, and ideas. No prior knowledge is required.
The program is free, and registration is encouraged. Drinks and cookies will be
provided.
