McQuade Fine Arts and Artist Stephanie McQuade is thrilled to
announce the launch of Introduction to Pastels, an immersive art course designed for beginners
in this medium or as a refresher for the more experienced. This engaging program explores the
vibrant world of pastels, guiding participants through essential techniques and creative projects
to master this versatile medium.
Course Overview
Running for five weeks, this course offers hands-on instruction in the fundamentals of pastel art,
including:
 Paper Types: Discover the best surfaces for pastels, from textured papers to toned
grounds, and how they influence your artwork.
 Pastel Types: Learn the differences between soft, hard, oil, and pan pastels, and how to
select the right one for your style.
 Mark Making and Tone: Experiment with techniques like hatching, scumbling, and
blending to create dynamic textures and depth.
 Value and Color: Master the interplay of light, shadow, and hue to bring vibrancy and
emotion to your compositions.
What You’ll Create
In the first two lessons, participants will build a strong foundation in pastel techniques and
material selection. Using skills learned, students will create stunning paintings in subsequent
sessions, including:
 A floral painting showcasing tonal gradients and expressive mark-making.
 A landscape composition emphasizing color harmony and value contrast.
 A personal project incorporating techniques from the course to reflect individual style.
