Tips for Planning a Group Getaway to the Lakes Region

September 05, 2025

There’s an art to organizing the perfect group vacation. From selecting activities that appeal to a wide range of interests to booking an accommodation that everyone will agree on, there’s a lot of planning and preparation that goes into coordinating a successful trip.

When that group getaway is to New Hampshire’s Lakes Region — the ultimate vacation destination in all seasons — the task becomes much simpler. With hundreds of miles of trails to roam, countless water activities, and a variety of dining options sure to please every palate, there’s something for everyone in your crew in this lakefront playground. From long-awaited family reunions to corporate outings and girls’ weekends, read on for our recommended to-dos during your next Lakes Region group retreat.

What To Do

Take a spin on the lake

If you’ve booked your Lakes Region vacation, odds are, you’re looking for at least one way to take advantage of all the sparkling lakes at your fingertips. To kickstart the vacation energy, plan to take a spin on the Tiki Hut Boats of New Hampshire, which offers two-hour private charters along Lake Winnipesaukee and weeknight specials like Wednesday reggae nights. There’s also Lake Winnipesaukee Boat Tours — a decidedly quieter option focused on learning the area’s history (Captain Bill has no shortage of fun facts to share). These cruises are available for up to 14 people, and you can BYOB (and food) aboard. If a party boat is more your speed, book a cruise with Mini Winni for up to 14 people. The company also operates a party bus for those looking to bar hop, tailgate, or simply travel around the Lakes Region in style.

For the outdoorsy adventurers, your Lakes Region trip isn’t complete without a visit to Gunstock Mountain Resort. Bring the group over to Gilford in the summer to experience the Adventure Park. You’ll be able to soar above the trees on a zipline, travel through the forest on a mountain coaster, take on an aerial challenge at one of New England’s largest treetop obstacle courses, or simply enjoy the scenery from the Panorama Chairlift. You’ll also want to swing by Prescott Farm in Laconia, where three main hiking trails bring you through woods, ponds, and over to the property’s sugarhouse. (Tip: Most of the farm’s public classes are also bookable for private groups; take a peek at the calendar of upcoming events.)

Save Time for R&R

Want to turn your trip into a spa retreat? For a wellness-focused getaway, book an appointment for everyone in your crew at one of the area’s local spas and wellness centers. The new Lake Estate on Winnisquam, set to open in late September, boasts a 5,000-square-foot, full-service spa — ideal for a day of pampered luxury. You’ll find less traditional (but highly effective) treatments, such as an infrared sauna and float tank, at Meredith Whole Living Center.

Of course, you’ll also want to treat the group to a memorable meal. There’s no shortage of eateries that embody the best of lakeside dining (check out our guide to local dining options). Beans and Greens Farm, a must-visit spot in Gilford, is home to a Notch biergarten. While away a few hours sipping brews and sampling bites like tacos, burgers, and wood-fired pies, plus plenty of shareables for the table. If you’re traveling with vino lovers, book a wine tasting or tour at Hermit Woods Winery & Sweet Mercy Kitchen, where “locabibes” can sip and swirl wine made from fruits beyond just grapes (think cranberries, blueberries, and apples) and dig into farm-to-table fare with thoughtful wine pairings. To turn lunch or dinner into an activity, visit Off the Rails Restaurant in Laconia and try your hand at cornhole, beer pong, and giant Jenga.
